Push and Pull Symbols

I went to a London coffee shop which had unmarked double glass doors... Push Pull Door After pushing and pulling different ways, I opened the door on the fourth attempt! In a world where signs with pictures of humans are preferred, I decided to design PUSH and PULL symbols.

Jean Taylor came up with the idea of conveying a sense of energy: a figure leaning forward for pushing - and leaning back for pulling. I came up with ideas - a single armed yellow character - and the bowed and striped doors. Another difference between the two symbols is that the pull symbol has a bar to pull on.

Using my pictures that I'd created using paper collages, contract Mac artist John Szwenk created the digital images of the PUSH and PULL symbols.

Push Pull Door Green Red As a result of a study by Oxford Brookes University in 2012, the signs are now offered with vertical text in colours Green and Red.
